Review: Dhobi Ghat

Verdict: Art house cinema/acquired taste
"K" Rating: 3
Watch: DVD

Dhobi Ghat is aptly also called Mumbai Diaries. This film marks the directorial debut of Kiran Rao (Aamir Kha's wife). Dhobi Ghat is poetry on celluloid, an ode to the city of Mumbai by Kiran. It is not your typical Bollywood flick, and marks the beginning of the no-interval movie trend in India.

It will invoke 2 reactions - coming out of the theater vocally trashing it or walking out reflecting. Hence, it falls into the category of Art-house cinema, one will need to have the mind-set/taste or patience for this movie.

Debutant Monica Dogre is apt as the NRI on a sabbatical in Mumbai. Pratiek Babbar is outstanding as munna - a dhobi by profession.Aamir befits the character of a recluse painter with debutant Kirti Malhotra as his digital muse. And the most important character of them all - the city of Mumbai which grows on its inhabitants as it influences and shapes their lives.A city teeming with migrant workers, struggler, bustling life at every corner be it the high-raised plush homes or the slums.
Dhobi Ghat explores human behavior of love, attachment, curiosity, escapism and the constant struggle for survival in hope for a better tomorrow. There are subtle reminders of the class conscious Indian society beautifully shown in the movie like when Shai (an NRI) invites a Dhoobi in for chai, her disapproving maid serves tea in a nice cup and a glass - befitting their social status.

The background score by the Academy Award winner music director Gustavo Santaolalla is outstanding. It adds depth to the movie and its characters.

Dhobi Ghat definitely caters to the multiplex audience. It creates a calmness in the air and leaves the audience soaked in it as they walk out of the theater into the hustle-bustle of the city they live in.

Review: Yamla Pagla Deewana

Verdict: Timepass Comedy
"K" Rating: 2.5
Watch: DVD/Theater

This is an out-n-out mass entertainer doeled out by the Deols! The Trio is back after the emotional drama of Apne, in a comedy flick.  Director Samir Karnik allows each of the Deols to play up their image and spoof it aswell. However one has to wait till the second half of the film for the spontaneous laugh out moments. Its only when we reach Punjab or shall I say Fun-jab that the fun begins.

YPD has spoofed all the stereotypical things Punjab is known for.Although Samir Karnik seems to have gone overboard with Sunny's character in the fight scenes, as they defy laws of physcis. It is fascinating to see Dharmendra perform and dance at this age, Bobby Deol is good but show stealer is Sunny Deol. On the whole the trio looks good onscreen. Anupam Kher is outstanding as he plays the stereotyped sardar.Kulraj Randhawa has little scope but looks stunning.

The title track "Yamla Pagla Deewana" , "Chada de Rang" (Rahat Ali version), "Sau Baar" are songs which leave a mark. Choreography of  "Sau Baar" could have been better, as the dancing does not match the music. The two item numbers are completely unnecessary and seem to be put in place to cater to the whistling audience in the interiors.

YPD will do excellent business in the single screen theaters of North. The budget of the movie is not big, and hence it will be paisa-vasol for the Deols!

Koffee with Karan, Season 3: Lara & Mahesh

Its Mixed Doubles time on Koffee with Karan, season 3! Lara Dutt graces the show with her Tennis Star fiance Mahesh Bhupati. This is the first time a sports personality has been on show. Bighee Basant with Big Daddy?!!! Chech it out.

Review: No One Killed Jessica

Verdict: Powerful and moving
"K" Rating: 4
Watch: DVD/Theater

There are very few movies made in recent times like No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ) which are so powerful, gut-wrenching and hard hitting. This docu-drama is based on the landmark case of Jessica Lall murder in a Delhi nightclub. The title is inspired by a 2006 Times of India headline when all the accused were acquitted. Director Gupta personifies the critical role the media played, in the resulting public outcry which led to the retrial and eventual conviction of the accused via the fictional journalist Meera Gaity. He has done an excellent job of reconstructing the years 1999 & 2006 onscreen via the Kargil war, Hijacking of AI 814 flight and a girl getting inspired by the movie Rang De Basant in 2006 to do a candle light march. This murder, remains etched  in a lot of Delhiits hearts and minds forever. For a very long time, Delhi nightclubs were deemed unsafe after this event.

Vidya Balan is excellent as Jessica's sister Sabrina, the middle class girl with restrained emotion in her quest for justice. Rani Mukherjee is stupendous as the career oriented, foul-mouthed, feisty/ "bitchy" journalist Meera Gaity. The entire casting of the film is very apt and very true to its real life characters. The defence lawyer who essays the role of the famous Ram Jethmalani is top-notch. NOKJ has a riveting screenplay and the background score by Amit Trivedi definitely adds to the impact. The film makes one feel angry, sad, frustrated and bitter about the umpteen flaws in our judiciary Yet also gives hope for justice even when dealing with powerful culprits. The dialogue "Justice has been denied, you can live with it, I will not" serves as a wakeup call for not taking injustice as a way of life.

We should be proud of our film industry for bringing on celluloid such an important event with such sensibility and accuracy.Business wise, the film will do excellent with word of mouth publicity in multiplexes/metros, it might be slow on the single screen theaters.
It is an inspiring film based on true events which everyone must see.

Karan Johar: Student of the year

After the issue-based, thought proving Blockbuster film My Name is Khan, Karan Johar is back with "Student of the Year". It stars 3 debutant's - Tarun Dhawan (David Dhawan' son), Alia Bhatt (Mukesh Bhatt's daughter) and Siddharth Malhotra. Karan promises that it will be a rom-com and typical candyfloss cinema he is known for! The film is being co produced by Shahrukh Khan. Its interesting to note that Alia and Tarun were not launched by their  dad's own production houses. I guess its a trend as set by Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. We look forward to Student of the Year!! and wish Karan Johar that it turns out to be "The movie of the year"!!

                                                   Yamla Pagla Deewana
The Deols are back together in a comedy flick after Apne. Sunny Deol plays an NRI returning to Punjab, who is welcomed by two con men played by Dharmendra and Bobby Deol. The title is inspired by a song from the 1975 Dharmendra film Pratiggya. Music is Punjabi-Hiphop-ish, foot tapping – thanks to the 6 music directors who have composed for YPD. This one definitely promises to be a laugh riot.

Koffee with Karan, Season 3: Shahrukh Khan

Ringing in the New Year on Koffee with Karan was noneother than the Badhshah of Bollywood, the King Khan, Shahrukh Khan.  Watch for some witty, funny remarks! Compared to all the other shows in this shows, in this tet-a-tet SRK and Karan are more serious.

An Insight into Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

This scene is from Karan Johar's movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna  (KANK). This movie explores the  complexity of relationships and the institution of marriage.KANK was the most powerful movies of late, after Kabhi Kabhi and Silsila. This particular scene is very insightful if looked upon closely. All of our lives are effected by two things - our own decisions (good or bad as later proved) and/or external factors (owing to the environment, others around us or accidents).  In this scene Dev (Shahrukh Khan) gets into an accident aka external factor which he has no control over and it changes the course of his life. Maya (Rani Mukherjee) on the other hand makes a decision which she regrets later on, thereby changing the course of her own life.
We have no control over the external factors - accidents, environments et al, but definitely we have some control over our own decisions. Lets pray that the decisions we take in our life prove to be the right ones.
