Review: Tees Maar Khan

Verdict: Timepass
"K" Rating: 2.5
Watch: DVD/Theater

Tees Maar Khan (TMK) is one outrageous, over-the top, farcical comedy film by Farah Khan. Don't try and find any logic or rationale in this movie - as with any other Bollywood comedy flick. TMK is the Bollywood adaptation of the Italian film "After the Fox".

TMK has everything in excess, loud characters, lack of emotions and an outrageous script.By loud I mean, literally loud, the entire film has a high decibel level and it appears everyone is shouting at each other in the second half. The first half definitely is much better than the second. Slapstick comedy and aboriginal couplets of Akshay make up for the laughter quotient. The whole village sequence reminds one of Billu Barbar. There are references of Steven Spielberg and Manoj Night Shyamalan which cater to class audience but the masses may not get the joke. Its interesting to note that although some jokes appeal to the multiplex audience, they would disapprove of the loud and crazy drama on the other hand the masses/single screen audience would be receptive to the loud and crude drama but may not comprehend some jokes. Instead of "Jai Ho" its "Hai Ho" for TMK's incessant jokes.

Akshay Kumar has done an outstanding job as the shameless con artist Tabrez Mirza Khan, the role seemed to be tailor made for him. Katrina Kaif  as an aspiring actress Aniya, looks  fabulous and plays the role of the dumb bimbbette to the hilt. Akshay Khanna plays the Oscar-crazed superstar well.

Foot-tapping "Sheila ki Jawani"  and Katrina's dance on it has already made history and taken the nation by storm. Sonu Nigam has sung the title track in 54 voices and Salmaan Khan makes a special appearance in the song "Walla Re Walla". Vishal-Shekhar along with Sirish Kunder  have definitely lived up to expectations and more with each track.

Final Verdict? Its a brainless comedy, watch it for timepass but definitely does not live up to the hype. Its decidedly not even close to Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om or Main Hoon Na. Yet it will recover the investment solely due to the holidays and no competition for 2 weeks.

Preview: Patiala House

Directed by Nikhil Advani, starring Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sherma this sports drama film is scheduled to release in Feburary 2011. Set in the UK, its about British-Asian identity and the cross-generational conflict between father and son.

Review: No Problem

Verdict: Bad
"K" Rating: 0.5/5
Watch: Don't bother, wait for it to come on cable

This multi-starer has "Problems galore!" - goes to show that it is imperative even for comedy films to have SOME storyline otherwise no amount of big names can save it.  Directed by Anees Bazmee, this movie makes his other comedies like Welcome/Singh is King exemplar. It's threadbare plot revolves around two goons (Akshay Khanna & Sanjay Dutt) and a diamond heist with Anil Kappor playing the ludicrous cop. The climax of the movie is even preposterous with a gorilla farting and Anil trying to woo a drag (Akshay Khanna).

No Problem has 3 big music directors - Pritam, Anand Raj Anand and Sajid-Wajid, yet only one song from the entire album is bearable -"Shakira".

Not sure why Anil Kappor made this trashy movie.

Review: Break Ke Baad

Verdict: eh.Okay
"K" Rating: 2.2/5
Watch: DVD

Break Ke Baad is a comedy-drama,coming of age film. Tells the story of childhood sweet hearts who explore the issue of "space" in their relationship and  ending up finding themselves.

The promos of the movie looked promising, however did not live up to the expectations. Shot in India and Australia, the Australia part seems to have been put together in a hurry. In some scenes, the camera moves so fast, that it can make the audience get vertigo

Imraan Khan is his usual best  as Abhay Gulati who is the calm, "steady rock to lean" on kinda guy. With this film he completes his trilogy of romcoms. Deepika Padukone is okay as the free spirited,  headstrong girl Aaliya. Debutant director Danish Aslam picks a hot issue with modern day couples but the screenplay does not do justice to it.Music by Vishal-Shekhar conveys the spirit of the movie well. "Ajab Leher Hai","Dhooriyan Bhi Hain Zaroori" and "Adhoore Hum" are noteworthy. These tracks have already secured their place on the charts.

Watch it on DVD as a good timepass, it gets a 2.2 on the K rating for trying and music.

Review: Band Baaja Baraat

Verdict: V.Good!
"K" Rating: 3.2
Watch: Theater/DVD

There are very few movies, where as an audience one knows what the ending might be, however the storyline is so tight and well written that it still manages to surprise and entertain. Band Baaja Baarat (BBB) is one such film.

Band Baaja Barat is set in Delhi and tells the story of 2 wedding planners Shruti (Anushka Sharma) and debutant Bittu (Ranvir Singh). Two Delhi university students who are polar opposites to each other but come together to start "Shaadi Mubarak". A star is born with this film, Ranvir Singh is excellent as the uncouth, street smart but good hearted slacker who does not know how to pronounce "binness". After 2 films Anushka finally gets a meaty role of the ambitious, stubborn punjabi girl from Janakpuri who dreams of being India's best wedding planner. The movie explores the line "don't mix work with pleasure" aka "jiske saad vyapaar karo usse kabi na pyaar karo".

Band Baaja Barat is a carnival of colors on celluloid- vibrant and invigorating. With  a stunning color palette, it covering weddings from Janakpuri to the multi crore Sainik Farms.Music by Salim-Suleman complements the theme and spirit of the movie. "Aivye Aivye" and "Tarqebe" are already chart toppers.Kuddos to debutant Director Manish Sherma for bringing the freshness and romance back to Yash Raj films.

A definite watch! This years most pleasant surprise. BBB will definitely inspire the entrepreneur in you!

Review: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey

Verdict: eh.Okay
"K" Rating: 2/5
Watch: DVD

Khelen Hum.. is based on the book Do And Die by Manini Chatterjee, a true story which narrates the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 against the East India Company. Directed by noneother than Ashutosh Gowariker,Bollywood's most earnest historian, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is a noble attempt at restoring glory to long- forgotten heros. However it fails to evoke the level of patriotism a subject like this should. It appears to more of a high school drama involving the British Raj. The entire first half of the movie sets the stage in such a slow pace that it drags. The second half zooms past with such urgency and momentum to its predictable climax that it leaves the audience zapped.

Overall it is a decent attempt, but does not even come close to Rang De Basanti, Lagaan or The Rising. It was refreshing to see Deepika Padukone in a traditional Indian avatar sporting long hair. Clean shaven and serious Abhishek Bachchan did a good job aswell.Music of KHJJS is not memorable, only the title track is noteworthy.

Watch it on DVD, if you want to travel back to the pre-independence era and want to your favorite stars onscreen instead of reading the book.

Koffee with Karan: PC-Shahid

One of Bollywoods most controversial couples sipping Koffee with Karan. If there is any "act in actress"...figure out if these 2 are in a relationship!Watch PC blush at Shahrukh Khan's name!
