Watch Shahrukh Khan & Karan Johar talk about Dostana2 in a Koffee with Karan type setting at Jashn 2010. This show will be telecast part of the New Year celebrations on Star TV 31st December night with a host of other Bollywood celebs performing to ring in the New Year!

My Name Is Khan: Sajda Song Promo

This is definitely the best New Years gift Karan Johar could give to SRK-Kajol fans - a song promo from their upcoming film My Name Is Khan. The song is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's "Sajda" directed by Shankar Ehsaan & Loy. Its beautifully shot on Kajol and Shahrukh..check it out!

SRK launches Energy Drink

Shahrukh Khan is often quoted saying "I wish there were 27 hrs in a day" or claiming that he does not sleep more then 4 hrs a day. You may ask yourself what keeps the King Khan looking so fresh and high on energy. We wonder if its the new "XXX Energy Drink" which SRK launched today at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai along with cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Watch him poke some fun at the event.

2009: Kareena & The Khans

2009 was an interesting year for Kareena Kapoor, as most of her films which she signed post Jab We Met released. Kareena was seen acting alongside all the Khans of Bollywood. She started the year with an item song with the King Khan SRK in Billu Barber, followed by Mein Aur Mrs Khanna with bad boy Salmaan Khan, Kurbaan with beu Saif Ali Khan and then ending the year the perfectionist Aamir Khan in 3-Idiots. Also, lets not forget Kareena also was seen with superstar Akshay Kumar in Kambhaqt Ishq, along with Hollywood's Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards. Unfortunately only Billu Barber and 3-Idiots worked magic on the box office. Kareena definitely has had some covetous roles this year. Here is wishing her more success in the coming years!

KJO's new Show: Lift Kara De

After the smashing success of 2 seasons of the talk show Koffee with Karan, Karan Johar is back with his starlet friends for a new show "Lift Kara De". The show boasts bringing together the stars with their 'biggest fan' and team them up for doing some good (wonder what that will be). Lift Kara De begins on 1st January 2010 on Sony Entertainment Channel. Check out the promo:

3 Idiots premier:All izz Well! SRK,Salmaan, Saif & Aamir

Bhaiyya All izz well among the Khans of Bollywood! So it seems look at the premier of Aamir Khan's 3-Idiots in Mumbai. This year was full of gossip stories on how Shahrukh Khan and Aamir were not getting along, however all the stories have been laid to rest and the Khan's seemed to have burried the hatchet as SRK attended the Premier - check out what he has to say. Also Aamir's good friend Salmaan attended the premier along with Saif Ali khan and an array of other Bollywood biggies.

Review: 3 Idiots

Verdict: Good.."All izz well"
"K" Rating: 4 / 5
Watch: Theater/DVD

3-idiots is the most awaited and hyped Aamir film of the year which accounts for the house full openings. This is a college movie portraying the life of 3 engineering students, their fear anxiety and triaumphs in a competitive enviornment. The movie takes us on a fascinating journey of 2 clumsy, funny idiots- Farhan(R.Madhavan) & Raju (Sherman Joshi) in search of their long lost buddy Rancho(Aamir Khan) with flash backs on their college days. Aamir, Kareena and Boman are fantastic in the film but Sherman Joshi is the surprise package in terms of stellar performance.Together they mesmerize the audience with their stupendous performance leaving the house in splits of laughter. This college flick is a must watch for the youth.

The Story of 3 Idiots touches on student suicides, parental obsession on engineering and medical professions and engineering colleges producing cookie cutter students who are not taught to think out of the box.
"Education is not about success but about pursuing excellence & passion, and in doing so success shall chase you" -this dialogue has been exemplified beautifully in the last scene with the backdrop of breath taking Pangong Lake in Ladakh. The title "3-Idiots" not only accounts for the adventures of 3 friends but also the "I'll do It On my Terms" philosophy they imbibe.Music of the 3 idiots is already a hit on the charts "Give me some sunshine" is great and "All Izz Well" will be the new anthem of students after Munna Bhai's "Jadu ki Jhappi"

The birthing scene towards the end with Mona Singh is very filmy and adds unnecessary drama. Tinkle jokes throught the movie were boorish, repetitive and pee-bit much!(anyone remember similar scenes from Rajkumar Hiran's Munna Bhai series?). These extraneous sequences prove to be speed bumps of an otherwise fun, good, hit movie. Seems like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Raj Kumar Hirani and Aamir have done it again!
........This review comes not only from a movie buff/critic but also an engineer.

Prosthetics & Bollywood

Old on....thats Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan!! Yes, these famous faces are virtually unrecognizable under mounds of makeup and prosthetics. Off late Bollywood isn't only going thru a change with the variety of movies its churning out but also it is literally changing the way our stars look. Thanks to globalization of artists and cutting edge special effects which provide for these unconventional looks.

Forty Four year old Aamir's stunned everyone when he appeared in a Tata Sky digital TV Ad playing an old (70+) sardarji. This came right after another commercial where he plays both a husband and wife discussing who should be watching TV.

Anyone who has seen R.Balki's movie "Paa" would have had a hard time believing that the 12-year old protagonist Auro who suffers from a rare age-accelerating disease Progeria is played by Amitabh Bachachan. With the help of Hollywood makeup artists the 68-year old vetran actor essayed the character a 12 year old boy who looks 65!. The look created waves in Bollywood and definitely set a new standard.

As the saying goes whatever anyone in Bollywood can do SRK can do better! The King Khan Shahrukh Khan who is going strong at 44 recently dawned the look of a 75-year old man for a TV Commercial for Dish TV where he is seen romancing actress Tanvi Azmi. This is not the first time Shahrukh has been made to look old for a character as many would remember the movie Veer Zara where he played Veer Pratap Singh.

These collaborations definitely keep the audience looking forward to path breaking performances as their favorite stars down new avatars.

Review: Paa

Verdict: Great
"K" Rating: 4 /5
Watch: Theater/DVD

Rarely does one across a heartwarming story like Paa. The protagonist Auro is a 12-year old who suffers with a rare genetic disorder Progeria, which makes him age 5 times faster. Its an encaptivating journey into the the world of happy go lucky Auro who by chance meets his politician father and ends up reuniting his parents. Even though the movie has been pitched as a "father-son" story the mother-son relationship works even better. R.Balki (director of Cheeni kam) should be applauded for tactfully making a happy, enrapturing film filled with plenty of tongue in cheek humor even with a terminal disease backdrop.

Five minutes into the movie one fogets that Auro's character is actually essayed by Amitabh Bachchan with mounds of makeup and prosthetics.Paa is a new chapter for Abhishek Bachchan who looks fantastic with his clean shaven, understated yet ambitious young politician avatar. Vidaya Balan is her usual best in her spirited and traditional looking role. Illaiyaraja's music is a breath of fresh air "Mudi Mudi Ittefaq se" ( which has about 3 versions) is good.

Paa is not without its share of hiccups namely an unnecessary lecture on media responsibility, Auro's ultra smart friends or the very filmy drama towards the end. However these are greatly overshadowed by the innocence of the characters and a beautiful storyline. Scenes like when Auro finds out he is born out of wedlock and learns the identity of his father, his dilemma on revealing this information to the man himself are pulchritudinous! This movie is definately not Jack or Curious case of Benjamin Button but in a league of its own/
Initially for some audience sections the promos and the media hype of the movie did not spark interest however with word of mouth publicity this movie is sure to catch on!

Nation in Solidarity 26/11: Shahrukh Khan

"Terrorism has no religion" said Shahrukh Khan as he spoke at the Nation in Solidarity against Terror event in New Delhi. It marked the 1-year anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks with the backdrop of India Gate and the Amar Jawan Joti. SRK was joined by eminent personalities from fields of arts, literature, politics and the youth to give the message that terror has no religion. Our solidarity, courage and resoluteness are the answer to the threat of terror." Actress Nandita Das gives a befitting introduction to SRK talking about his grandfather. Earlier this week Shahrukh was seen at Marine Lines, Mumbai penning his message on the Memory Wall for the martyrs.

Review: De Dana Dan

Verdict: Okay /Timepass .
"K" Rating: 2.8 /5
Watch: DVD

When watching comedy flicks the rule of thumb is to leave your brains outside the theater and not to find logic. This rule is mandatory for De Dana Dan as it is pure mindless entertainment which promises plenty of laughs.Just enjoy the one-liners, slapstick comedy of the 27+ confused money crazed characters. It is no Hera Pheri by any standards but its a decent attempt by Priyadarshan. The music is good, especially"Paisa Paisa" by RDB.

The biggest stumbling block of the film is its storyline. The movie starts off with an Akshay track and 1hr into the movie he disappears (gets locked up in a closet) giving way to numerous other tracks which unleash chaos and confusion. It seems the director did not have time to tie up all the stories so he literally submerses them in water (the hotel where they are floods) with an Akshay story wrap up. No doubt the credits say "Filmed" by Priyadarshan and not "Directed".

The tagline "The greatest entertainers are back" and the poster are misleading as there is no comedy scene between Akshay, Sunit Shetty and Paresh Rawal together. However the chemistry of Akshay and Sunil Shetty as friends is great.De Dana Dan boasts casting nearly all the comedians that Bollywood has to offer so all hell had to break loose on screen. Akshay, Sunil Shetty, Archana Puran Singh and Rajpal Yadav are outstanding in the film. Chunky Pandey has a notable come back.

22nd Jan 2010: Veer

As we ready ourselves to ring in the new year - there is more to celebrate as the year 2010 starts of with a glittering line up of Bollywood flicks. First up is "Veer" -an epic film set in British India starring Salman Khan. Produced by Vijay Galani with direction by Anil Sharma (Gadar/Hero/Apne fame) and written/distributed by Salman Khan looks promising. Veer is the Indian adaptation of the Russian historical novel Taras Bulba by Nikolai Gogol which was called "one of the 10 greatest books" of all times by Ernest Hemingway. From the promo (which came out with De Dana Dan) is about 3:43 mins long, the movie appears to be a cross between Lagaan and Gladiator. With a budget of 75 crore and the media hype already building up this movie is sure to open to packed houses on Jan 22nd 2010. Read up more on thier Official Website

Shilpa & Raj Extravaganza

The Engagement: Shilpa looked radiant with her 14 Carat ring after the ceremony which took place at the Juhu residence of Kundra. Sister Shamita was missed at the ceremony as she was away in the Big Boss house and we are glad her producers let her exit the show for big sisters D-Day.

The Sangeet/Mehndi: This pre-wedding bash took place in Khandala to kickstart the celebrations. Complete with designer mehndi by Veena Nagda to dances choreographed by Ganesh Hagede set the mood right of the wedding party.

The Wedding: took place on 22nd November at amansion owned by Shilpa's business partner/friend Kiran Bawa in Khandala. Raj dressed in a Shantanu-Nikhil (designer for all outfits of the groom) Shervani rode a chariot to the wedding venue. Shilpa looked stunning in a traditional Manglorian trousseau by Tarun Tahiliani adorning jewelry of over 6 crs. Few Bollywood celebs were invited for the ceremony as the wedding party consisted manly of the Bhagnani's and family and friends of the couple.

The Reception: 24th November at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai definitely proved to be a grand
affair with who's who of Bollywood turning up. It seemed like a red carpet event as media camped outside and took messages from the invitees. RDB and Richi Rich entertained the guests while we're not sure if justice was done to the 80kg/9-tier wedding cake by the figure conscious celebs. Those who made the evening memorable by their presence were Shahrukh & Gauri Khan, Hrithik & Suzzane Roshan, Amitabh Bachhan with bahu Aishwarya, King of good times Vijay Mallya, Sahara Chairman Subrotto Das, Govinda, Javed Akhtar - the list is endless. The ones who were conspicuous by their absence were Salmaan Khan (said to be busy shooting Dabaang) and Akshay Kumar & Twinkle (supposedly not
invited), Saif, Aamir and the 3 actresses (Kareena-Shooting in Aussi
Land,Katrina-has Jaundice & Priyanka). Nonetheless it was a prodigious turnup of the celebs
biggies making it a Big Fat Bollywood Reception to remember.

The Pujas: A trend set by the Bachchans to fly to different temples post-wedding is being continued by the Shetty gal. Shilpa & Raj leave for the Lord Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati and then to the Oneness University in Chennai to take the blessings of Shilpa's spiritual guru Sri Amma.

The Honeymoon: The newly weds are said to be spending a month long Honeymoon at the Atlantis in the Bahamas beginning December. This one sure does take the cake - considering the Hurricane season would be just getting over in the region.

Cosmo Fun Fearless Award: Shahrukh Khan

Every year Cosmopolitan Magazine which is universally known as the Bible for girls celebrates its true essence by hosting - The Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Awards. Keeping the spirit alive this year was a fun filled award ceremony hosted in Mumbai. Celebrating along were the biggest names in the industry Katrina, Deepika and yes how can any awards ceremony be complete without the King Khan Shahrukh Khan, who was the recipient of the Fun Fearless Male of all time. Check it out!

Review: Kurbaan

Verdict: Good.
"K" Rating: 3.5/5
Watch: Theater/DVD

Debutant director Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan is a good watch for Theater or DVD.The movie foremost is a love thriller which is bound to send chills down your spine. The screenplay is gripping and keeps the audience on tenterhooks thought the 2.5 hours.

Kurbaan amalgamates both Fanna and New York (infiltrating a sleeper bunker & marriage to a terrorist),then takes it a step
further. Its journey of a girl finding love in India to uncovering the heinous truth of her south Asian (read Stepfordish from the Stepford Wives) neighbourhood in America.Kareena has given a fantastic performance of an unsuspecting Hindu wife Avantika trapped in a world of love, deceit, terrorism and orthodox Islam. Saif gives his usual flawless performance. Vivek has definitely grown as an actor - his American accent is fantastic as he doesn't go over board with it. Music of Kurbaan is great and already a favorite at the charts. Kareena's ankle length kurtas designed by Aki Narula are bound to become a fashion rage.

There are 3 flaws in the story of Kurbaan, two of which however can be written off as cinematic privileges. These include terrorists who induct a new recruit in their mission without doing any background check, a war journalist(Vivek) not notifying the FBI till the end and thus endangering innocent lives. Third and the most inexcusable one being when Avantika(Kareena) decides to call an individual rather then the cops when she uncovers a plot to blow up a plane. These faux pas eat away one point off the "K" rating.

Koffee with Kurbaan

Going with the successful theme of Koffee with Karan, Director Producter Karan Johar recently interviewed the stars of Kurbaan in "A Date with Kurbaan". Kurbaan is a much awaited Dharma Productions movie produced by Karan Johar and directed by Renzil D'siva starring the real live couple Saif Ali Khan & Kareena Kapoor. This promotional interview sheds light on Saif-Kareena relationship (No not the reel life one in Kurbaan!). Interestingly they talk very little about the movie in the show!

SRK's Next: Dulha Mil Gaya

Finally! the preview of Shahrukh Khan's much awaited film of the year is out - Dulha Mil Gaya. It stars Fardeen Khan, Sushmita Sen, Tara Sharma and an extended cameo of the King Khan (1 hours plus) directed my Muddasar Aziz (Sushmita's ex-beau). The film has seen quite a few delays and has been in production since 2007, its been shot mainly in Trinidad & Tabago.

"Humara zikr to hua har pal fasane mein,
to kya hua thode der hue aane mein"

A befitting diagolue from the movie for the release of the film we say!

Kareena's strife with Privacy

Privacy has always been a concern for public figures especially film stars. With the advancement of technology and communication the prying eyes of media are stronger then ever before. The fine line between gossip/good journalism/appropriate news is becoming obscure in the demand supply market of news media.Case in point - Kareena's private sms sent to boyfriend Saif being captured on camera. Kareena was attending a press conference for the upcoming film "Kurbaan" when a Marathi news channel (Star Majha) zoomed in on a sms conversation Kareena was engaged in, on her Blackberry. Kareena seemed to be responding to Saif's message "Sorry baby..was talking about your role only" with a "You were rude Saif! I am hurt". Sipping her Tea/Coffee Kareena seemed to be unaware of the voyeuristic eyes of the camera. The TV channels however claims it was an accident. Accident or not - Kareena's privacy seems to have been violated. Advice to our our film stars? Please be a little more conscious and aware of yourselves. After all its better to be safe then sorry! Especially to Kareena who has a history of a private mms leaking to the public (Shahid-Kareena mms) They have privacy screens for cellphones for a reason!

Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Verdict: Good Timepass
"K" Rating: 3
Watch: DVD/Theater

Ajab Prem Ki..is a sweet romantic comedy. Its fresh in its casting, styling and treatment. Don't try and find logic in the movie, sit back laugh and enjoy the lead pair. Its no Garam Masala or Golmaal nevertheless Rajkumar Santoshi does a good job with the comedy. To save from reading, here is a list of pros and cons:

Pros:
*Ranbir & Katrina look fresh and sizzle onscreen
*Ranbir! He portrays myriad of emotions
successfully. One instantly falls for his character.
*Good Comedy
*Fab styling of the actors

Cons:
*At times the comedy looks forced and repetitive
*Could have been shorter, seems a little stretched
Music of the film is great and rapidly climbing the charts. Two songs sung by Atif Aslam are highlights of the film which take one's breath away in terms of picturization aswell the music.

Fox STAR Studios

Hollywood giant Twentieth Century Fox recently has partnered with Asian firm STAR to create Fox STAR Studios as it forays into the Asian Film market. They aim to produce south Asian films and distribute them world wide under the banner of Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Searchlight. Fox Star Studios hopes to penetrate the markets of China, Hong Kong and India. Fox is the last one to join the bandwagon of foreign production houses such as Columbia Pictures, Walt Disney and Sony coming to India. Let's hope Fox has better luck then the others. Here is an interesting interview of Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios by Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh.

Happy Birthday: SRK on turning 44

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAHRUKH
! from Bollywoodish! Still going strong at 44 but the actor says he still feels 25 (and he sure looks it!).

Review: London Dreams

Verdict: Good.
"K" Rating: 3/5
Watch: DVD

London Dream has an apt star cast with friendship, professional jealousy and insecurity forming the backdrop . London Dreams would be a winner had it not been for its music and weak ending. The outburst of Ajay, Salmaan's saintly behaviour at the end lack verisimilitude. The movie misses out on a perfect ending due to an unnecessary song sequence. Music of the film by Shankar Ehsaan Loy does not do justice to the beautiful shots of the performances.

Watch: For great performances by the Salmaan and Ajay- they have proved themselves yet again.Comic timing and pronunciations/new lingo of Salmaan's Character. Emotional intensity of the film and good cinematography make it a DVD watch.

Story: Remember Shakalaka Boom Boom? (*ing Bobby Deol/Upen Patel) maybe not. SBB like London Dreams is based on a old hollywood flick Amadeus. Its a story about 2 friends - the introvert, ambition driven Arjun and the fun-loving, carefree aimless Manjeet(Manu). They say ambition is self driven but talent is gods given. This drives a wedge between the two friends when Arjun brings Manu to London to join his Band but discovers Manu's muscial genius. Asin look good as a rocker girl and pairs with Salmaan beautifully.

("K" rating reflects my personal star rating from now on. I thank my brother for the suggestion)

Blue: Its all about Special Effects

If you saw the much hyped movie Blue irrespective whether you liked it or not, you could not deny the great special effects it had. There were scenes when the audience could be fooled into thinking they were watching a Hollywood flick.Movies like Luck, Blue and now Aladdin may not have a blockbuster tag on them, but they do prove that Indian cinematography and vfx has come of age. True, most of the special effects are still being done by Hollywood brains but on Indian shores with companies like Prime Focus, Eros and ofcourse Red Chillies vfx.

Let's have a look at how some scenes were created in Blue (Now we know where the most expensive film spent most of its budget)
(curtesy- BollywoodHungama.com)

Interesting Promos!

Due to the high influx of movies hitting the theaters every Friday in recent weeks, we are inundated with film promos. Here are two promos which caught my eye.

3 idiots - Starring Amir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sherman Joshi directed by Rajkumar Hirani and Produces by Vidhu Vinod Chopra this is the most awaited film of the year. Based on the book "5 point someone" by Chetan Bhagat it tells the story of 3 engineering students at a big name school. This is a definate watch! the promo was just released with London Dreams.

Rocket Singh - Salesman of the year: Starring Ranbir Kappor plaing a sadarji directed by none other then Shemit Amin (Chade Fame) and produced under Yash Raj Banner this movie is up for release on Dec 11. The initial promo's are unlike any other promos one has seen in recent times. Marketing people receive kudoos as they seem to be doing true justice to the tag line of "Salesman of the year". We have yet to see how the movie will be, but the promos are definitely "different" and appeal to the common man aka masses- hence we have hope from the movie aswell.

Chance Pe Dance- Stars none other then Shahid Kapoor opposite Genelia D'souza directed by ad-filmmaker Ken Gosh (Ishk Vishk) and is produced by Ronnie Screwvala. Looking at the promo it will be a must watch for the youth. The movie seems to have it all -Ken Gosh's trademark stunning visuals coupled with Shahid's dancing and Genelia's liveliness. After looking at the promo one realises why Farah Khan asked the south beauty to say the tongue twister "kaccha papad pucca papad" on her show Tere Mere Beach Mein. It is releasing in January of 2010 but promises to be worth the wait! The movie appears to focus majorly on dance and Shahid looks all shaped up for it!(Trailor brings mind images of movies like Save the Last Dance/ Step-up?).

Here are the trailers which are making the rounds in the theater and creating the buzz.

Lux Commercial: Aishwarya & Abhishek Bachchan

After 2 years, Aishwarya & Abhishek finally seem to be warming up to the idea of appearing together on screen post marriage. It began with the couple appearing on the Oprah Show less then a month ago and it continues on with the new Lux soap commercial.

This is the first time the sizzling couple is appearing in a chimerical together. Ashwarya has long association with Lux along with other Bollywood beauties. Abhishek is the only second actor ever appearing in a Lux ad, the first was Shahrukh Khan who appeared in the soaps 75th Anniversary celebration Ad.

For the 34-second commercial Ash & Abhishek took home a whopping 25 crore it is belived. The golden couple was styled by Akki Narula and directed by Stephen Mead. Shankar Ehsaan Loy have given a very soothing music to the Ad. It provides the perfect background score to the playful tricks Ash is playing on husband Abhi. The body language of the actors and the overall feel of the commercial is very warm. Looks like everyone had a blast shooting it and it definitely conveys so! what can we say but "Ab Aishwarya Abhi ke bina nahi" dekhengi kahin.

On the making interview: Abhishek seems down to earth and casual, but note Ash's 2-3 buzz words which she keeps repeating - brand connect, relationship, communication, commercial.
